Vallis' is a post-modern sculpture is similar to the woven patterns found in traditional Asian mats – hand woven carpets made from indigenous fibers mostly popular in East Asian countries especially in the Philippines which are mostly used as beds. The years of experience honed the different techniques that can be applied to create this magnificent piece. The highly renowned metal sculptor Nicholas Yust used thin metal strips that can be easily bent and manipulated to create an ingenious overlapping and intertwining patterns similar to those of a mat. After forming the metal strip mat, it is attached to the base metal plate by delicate welding. The heat needed while welding should be critically controlled because the thin metal strips are prone to premature melting when subjected to excessive heat. The contrast between the woven strips of black metal and the polished base metal plate highlights the various qualities of metal.
